Russell Crowe welcomes new baby boy

Oscar-winning actor Russell Crowe is a dad for the second time.

Crowe's wife Danielle Spencer gave birth to Tennyson Spencer Crowe at 7.21am (AEST) on Friday.

An excited Crowe used Sydney radio station 2UE to announce his news to the world.

"I have some more news for you, Charlie has a brother," Crowe told morning show host and long-time friend John Laws.

"Dani is great, mate, everybody is fine. The family is over there giving her big kisses and stuff. I am just going home to pick up Charlie to take him over to meet his new baby."

Weighing eight pounds (3.6 kg), the healthy boy was delivered at Sydney's Royal North Shore Private hospital.

Crowe said the couple had been easing two-year-old Charlie into big brother mode during the pregnancy.

"We have been building him up pretty well for it," the 42-year-old said.

"So we have actually called it his baby."

Tennyson was named after famous English poet Alfred Lord Tennyson, who died in 1892.

"We will call him Tenny for short," Crowe said.

"Dani was looking through books and my brothers name is Terry so that makes it TC as well, so slightly after him. But mainly because it's just different."

Crowe's and Spencer's parents arrived at the hospital on Friday morning to celebrate the birth.

Once known for his wild ways and "that phone throwing incident" of June 2005, the talented New Zealand-born Crowe has settled down since marrying Spencer in April 2003.

Crowe, who has spoken openly about cherishing fatherhood, will continue to juggle family and work.
