    Default Help

I'm doing a biography on Henry Ford. Please point out any mistakes I have made or anywhere I can improve. This is what I've done so far:

    Biography on Henry Ford

Henry Ford was born on July 30th, 1863. He was born and raised on a farm in Dearborn, Michigan, U.S.A. As a young child, he was always fascinated by machines. Henry was the first born of William & Mary Ford's six children.

His first sight of a steam engine moving by itself fired his ambition to become an engineer. Four years after spotting the steam engine moving by itself he became an apprentice in a machine shop. From there he worked as a travelling repairman for a firm that made portable steam engines when he was at the age of 19. He was employed as a repairman for 10 years and then he went to work as a chief engineer at the Detroit Electric Light Company.

The car was just invented in Europe and already caught Henry Ford's imagination. Henry then went on and built his first car in 1986. He called it the Quadricycle due to it having bicycle wheels linked by a frame. Ford's first car was much lighter and faster than the 'Horseless Carriages" of that time which highly impressed the mayor of Detroit. The mayor was so impressed with Henry Ford's first car that he provided the money for Ford to built a better, second car.

A rich businessman by the name of William H. Murphy was attracted to Ford's second car. William H. Murphy took Ford's second car for a 60 mile test drive (100 kilometres) and was surprised at the fact that it didn't break down. The car was so strong that Murphy, Maybury & others set up a company called Detroit Automobile Company in 1899. Henry Ford was Detroit Automobile Company's mechanical superintendant. Ford spent too much time improving the car and not enough on building the car for sale which caused the Detroit Automobile Company to close in just over a year.

After the DAC closed down, Ford turned his attention to designing race cars. Ford easily beat the leading car maker, Alexander Winton, in a race in Detroit in the year 1901. Murphy and four others who had lost money in the Detroit Automobile Company had suddenly became interested again. They formed the Henry Ford Company but it failed again.

In 1902, Murphy and his partners fired Ford and went on to build the car Ford had designed and also changed the name of the business to the Cadillac Automobile Company. Henry's car, as the Cadillac, was a great success.

The Ford Motor Company was formed in 1903 with Henry Ford as chief engineer and vice president. They only produced a few cars a day. Henry Ford followed his dream of making a reasonably priced, reliable, and efficient car with the introduction of Model T in the year 1908. Model T initiated a whole new era of personal transportation. It immediately became a huge success. Half of the cars in America were Model Ts by 1918.

The growing demand for the Model T forced the company to open a large factory in Highland Park, Michigan, in the year 1910. Ford's production on Model Ts made his company the largest automobile manufacturer in the world.

During the late 1910s and early 1920s, the company began construction of the world's largest industrial complex along the banks of the Rouge River in Dearborn, Michigan.
